BSN
Governance
The BSN is run and managed by the experienced team at Achill Legal led by Amanda Carpenter, CEO. Achill Legal have worked closely with the Bar Council to develop the network since its foundation in 2021.
We are delighted to have taken on the delivery of the network and look forward to helping it grow, develop, and further support the Bar as it tackles the challenges of transition to net zero.
To ensure a smooth transition and the continued engagement of the Bar Council, we have set up an Advisory Board to provide strategic leadership and advice to BSN.
The Advisory Board is made up of:
- A member of the Bar Council’s Senior Management Team
- The co-chairs of the Bar Council’s Climate Crisis Working Group
- A member of the Legal Practice Management Association
- Two representatives from the network’s membership
- A representative from DWF and Clyde & Co

The Secretariat
Achill Legal provides secretariat support to the sector’s main sustainability networks, including: Legal Charter 1.5, the Legal Sustainability Alliance, the Greener Litigation Pledge and One Million Hours. We bring together leaders from academia, business and professional services to collaborate and find solutions to the complex problems that climate change presents. The team at Achill Legal has delivered strategic leadership and practical support to the legal industry for over a decade.
Supported by
The BSN is supported by DWF, Clyde & Co, Complete and the Bar Council of England and Wales.
“The Bar Council is incredibly proud of the Bar Sustainability Network – a community of barristers and chambers committed to environmental sustainability, which we’ve built up since 2021. Achill Legal has supported the Network since the beginning and so it feels like a natural next step for Achill to take on the delivery of the Network to help it grow even further and ensure chambers have access to expert advice and best practice from across the whole legal sector.
Barrister members of the Network, representatives of the Bar Council’s Climate Crisis Working Group and Bar Council officers will continue to help set the Network’s strategic direction as the Bar works towards its net zero future.”
Sam Mercer, Head of D&I and CSR, The Bar Council of England and Wales
“DWF is committed to action to enable a just transition on sustainability. This includes collaborating and working with those in our sector, supply chain and in the organisation itself. Understanding and measuring Scope 3 emissions across our value chains is therefore a focus for all law firms as we continue our transition to net zero and meet the increasing expectations of clients, investors and other stakeholders. The DWF carbon footprint includes emissions attributed to barristers in our supply chain both externally and through services provided by our own in-house DWF Chambers. Working with Achill, Clyde & Co and the Bar Sustainability Network BSN, we will support and empower members to embark on ambitious climate action enabling them to better understand their environmental impacts and calculate the associated carbon emissions.”
Kirsty Rogers, Chief Sustainability Officer, DWF
“The Bar Sustainability Network (BSN) plays a crucial role in helping barristers and chambers within the legal supply chain, measure and report their carbon emissions. This is increasingly important as law firms face pressure, from their clients, to measure, report and reduce their own greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including Scope 3 emissions, which encompass the emissions of the barristers and chambers in the law firm supply chain. The BSN, supported by Clyde & Co and DWF, offers strategic leadership and guidance to members, helping them transition to a net-zero future including the provision of learning resources, hosting events, and facilitating networking opportunities which share best practices and drive collective actions.”
Paddy Linighan, Chief Sustainability Officer, Clyde & Co
“Complete are delighted to be continuing their sponsorship of the Bar Sustainability Network as it enters a new phase. We look forward to working with Network members to support their transition to net zero by providing carbon neutral solutions to supply chain challenges”
Joanne Evans, Account Development Manager, Complete
